Module 6 Unit 3 A Healthy Life Reading:Advice from Grandad
Teaching aims:
1. Inspire students to think about some issues on healthy life by showing two groups of pictures. 2. Enable students to get a general and understanding of the text by finishing several tasks. 3. Enable students to realize the danger of smoking and how important to have a healthy life. Teaching important points:
Enable students to learn the bad effects of smoking and how to give advice on stopping advice on stopping smoking. Teaching methods:
Brainstorming, discussion, cooperative learning and oral practice Teaching aids:
A computer and a projector Teaching procedures: Step 1: Leading-in Pictures displaying.
Ask students to make comments on these senior citizens’s life and what kind of lifestyle they like.
And then ask students what their grandma or grandpa’s lifestyle.
After students talking something about their granddad’s life, teachers can ask several questions about them and their granddad, so in this way, the topic of reading passage can be brought in. Step 2 Pre-reading (1)Discussion: Look at the title and tell what advice a granddad will usually give to his grandson. Such as: study hard, have regular meals, early bed and early rise, etc. (2)words clarification Due to: because of Tough: difficult
Be addicted to: unable to stop taking harmful things, especially drug Adolescence: the time, usually between the ages of 12 and 18 Abnormal: unusual

Step 3 Reading
1) General understanding: Questions:
1. What do the two parts of the whole passage refer to respectively? Possible answers:
Part 1: a letter from a granddad to his grandson explaining how a smoker becomes addicted to cigarettes and why he should give up.
Part 2: a webpage of some advice on stopping smoking. 2) Specific understanding: (paragraphs analysis) Task 1: Keywords refining
Ask students to use several key words to refine different paragraphs. Para 1: importance of being healthy Para 2: Jame’s smoking problem
Para 3: Three different ways of addiction Para 4: Harmful effects of smoking Task 2: Appreciating & imagination
Ask students to appreciate the first paragraph and then imagine one situation when they are at the Grandpa’s age.
Task 3: Opinion airing
“I know how easy it is to begin smoking and how tough it is to stop smoking.”
Ask students to air their opinions on the reason why it is easy to begin smoking and tough to stop in terms of the three key words, that is physically, habit, mentally. Task 4: Brainstorming
Ask students to think of as many harmful effects of smoking as possible apart from the harmful effects in the text.
Task 5: Source tracing
Ask students what of website this page might come from. Step 4: Post-reading: Personification conversation
Situation: We have grown aware of the great threat posed to human beings by cigarettes. We are lucky to know that cigarette has found its bad effects itself. Listen! Next is a conversation between two cigarettes helping addicts more aware of the threats they’re receiving. Step 5 Homework
Write a reply for James to his granddad.
