1. Students will be able to learn about why we should keep advertisers honest.
2. Students will be able to understand the ways to keep advertisers honest by applying the following reading skills: skimming, scanning and word guessing. Process and methods:
Students will be able to apply some reading skills including skimming, scanning and word guessing and have a good knowledge of the topic. Emotion, attitude and values
Students will have a clear view about how to keep advisers honest and then they can protect their own rights. Important points:
At the end of the lesson students will clearly understand how to keep advertisers honest. Difficult points:
The students will find it difficult to raise their awareness of voicing their own complaints and protecting their own rights. Teaching methods: Top down reading method
Teaching procedures: Step I Lead-in
Play a video to draw the students’ attention to some false advertising. Step II Pre reading Study the title with a question:
Why do you think it is necessary to keep advertisers honest? Step III Fast reading
Students read the subheadings and find the answer to the question: What are the ways to keep advertisers honest? Step IV. Careful reading
Para 1. Students read the first paragragh, find the general idea and identify the writing purpose.
Para 2. Students will read this paragraph for the three legal restrictions on ads and try to add their own laws.
Para 3. Students will learn about how advertising organizations make sure of their honest advertisements and the importance of codes of ethics.
Para 4. Students will be informed of how to make a complaint and what is the procedure of handling consumer complaints.
Para5. Students read the last paragragh to find out how to do as the saying: Buyer Beware. Step V Post-reading
Make a complaint about one of the two false advertisements on the book. Step VI Homework
Make a dialogue of a complaint on the phone between a consumer and a clerk in the complaints organization.
