Warming up & Reading
School: Chengxian No.1 Middle School Teacher: Nan Xiaoguang
Teaching aims:
1. Help the students learn more information about the USA 2. Train the students reading skills and spoken English.
3. Help the students learn the huge diversity of races and cultures in the USA,especially in California. Teaching important points:
1. Let students understand the passage and learn about the history of settlement of California.
2. Get the students to learn different reading skills. Teaching difficult points:
1. Develop students’ reading ability.
2. Develop students’ sense of cooperative learning. Teaching time: 45minutes.
Teaching aids: multimedia

Teaching steps: Step1. Warming up
1. Show some pictures about the USA.
2. Ask the students to brainstorm ,motivating some basic information of the USA.
What do you know about the USA?
3. Help the students talk about the location of the USA.
4. Show a video about California and ask the students to predict the content of reading part.
Step2. Fast Reading
Ask the students to skim the reading passage and find out the main idea and the passage structure . How many kinds of people are mentioned in this text? What are they? Two minutes later, check the answers.
Step3. Intensive reading
Task 1 Scanning:
Ask the students to read the part of Native Americans quickly and fill in the form. 1. When: They lived in California_________________.
2. How: They crossed the Bering Strait in the______to________ by means of________. 3. What happened to native Americans in the 16th century?
Task 2 Listening
Listen to the part of the Spanish and note down the important events according to the time
given.
16th century ---------- Spanish soldiers arrived and took their land 18th century ---------- California was ruled by Spain in 1846 ----------- California became part of Mexico in 1821
----------- Mexico gave California to the United States
Task 3 Group work
Ask the students to read the part of Russians , Gold Miners & Later Arrivals in groups and answer the following questions.
1. When did Russians begin settling in California?
2. What attracted people from all over the world to California in 1848? 3. What brought even large numbers of Chinese to California in 1860s?
4. Besides Chinese, what other immigrants arrived in California in the first half of 20th century
Step4. Discussion

Think about the question and discuss in groups,using the outline the people of California as a clue. Why is California such a multicultural community and is called a land of diversity? Two minutes later ,ask some students to share their ideas.
Step 5. Writing
Teach the students what we should consider if we want to introduce a country or a state.
If we want to introduce a country or a state, you need to consider its size, ….
population, location, language, history, capital, climate, industry and education etc.
Step 6.Homework
Using what we learned in this class,write a composition about another place such as England ,Beijing,your hometown...
