How to write a good essay
-- using proper conjunctions

Step One: lead-in Ask students to see two essays which are written by two students and tell which is better and why.
Step Two: Ask students to read the two paragraphs and tell which one is better; then finish the other two paragraphs using proper conjunctions;
Eg1. He works hard. He is not likely to have a successful career. He will still be a useful person in the society.
He works hard, but he is not likely to have a successful career.
However, he will still be a useful person in the society. Eg2. He helped me in time. I passed the exam.
Keys: He helped me in time; as a result, I passed the exam. Thanks to his timely help, I passed the exam. As a result of his timely help, I passed the exam. Eg3. My father didn’t criticize me. He praised me.
Keys: To my surprise, my father didn’t criticize me. He praised me instead.
Step Three: Brainstorming in groups: List as many conjunctions or phrases as possible. Write the conjunctions on the blackboard. References: 1.表并列或遞進
