1. Students will learn some words and expressions regarding the topic, such as rap, improvising, record, backing tracks, turntable and so on.
2. Students will will get a better understanding of hip hop music from the aspects of definition, origin, breakthrough, reasons for success, famous hip hop artist and so on. 過程與方法
1. Students can compare notes about basic information of hip hop music through task-based reading, including sharing their mind maps drawn before class.
2. Students can comprehend two extracurricular reading materials and work out the questions concerning them by pair work.
3. Students will bravely express what they can learn from hip hop and hip hop artists after group discussion. 情感、態(tài)度與價值觀
1. Students, even those who don’t like hip hop music, will comprehensively get to know about hip hop.
2. Students will know what positive effect hip hop music and hip hop artist can have on us and what we can learn from hip hop. 教學(xué)重點、難點

1. Letting students be able to express their thoughts logically and clearly according to the texts.
2. Guiding students to combine self-study, pair-work and group-work and grab

2. Guiding the students to pay more attention to the true hip hop spirit and be a brave and persistent person in the future.

Teaching Procedure
1) Lead-in
What American music types do you know about?
Look at the pictures and tell me what types they are.
2) Outline
Read the subtitles in the passage and match the following topics with each part.
Part1: Definition and origin Part2: Breakthrough Part3: Reasons for success
Part4: Ways of recording
3) Part1—Preview assignment report
Show your mind map of part1 to class. (Two works to be shared.)
4) Part2—Read for breakthrough
Q1: What does “breakthrough” mean? How can we explain this word in English?
A: An important change or important progress. Read Part2 and answer the following two questions.
Q2: What’s the breakthrough made by MC Herc in para.2?
A: He and other DJs made percussion breaks longer by using two records on two turntables, side by side.
Q3: What’s the breakthrough in the way of rapping in para.3?
A: At the beginning, MCs repeated words and phrases and then improvising.(Play a video to explain the rapping way.)
Later they experimented different vocal and rhythmic approaches, using rhyming

5) Part3—Read for reasons for success
Read part3 and find out the reasons for its success. You may figure out some information to support your points as well.
Reason1: It’s cheap and easy.
Supportive information: You just need two turntables and a microphone. Anyone can be an MC, using songs which have already been recorded.
Reason2:
Possible answer1: People were bored with the pop music of the day.
Possible answer2: Hip hop took advantage of that and provided a kind of disco music for people who hated disco!
Supportive information:
People were bored with the pop music of the day. Disco music and rock music were both in decline in the mid-1970s. However, disco music had a strong beat, and it was easy to dance to. Hip hop took advantage of that and provided a kind of disco music for people who hated disco!
Q: In the sentence “Hip hop took advantage of that and provided a kind of disco music for people who hated disco”, what does “this” refer to?
A: Disco’s strong beat that’s easy to dance to.
So the 2nd reason should be “Hip hop took advantage of disco’s strong beat when people were bored with pop music.”
6) Part4—Read for ways of recording
Read part4 and find out the answers to Question1 and Question2.
Q1: How many ways of recording were mentioned in para.7? What are they? A: Two. At first, musicians recorded the backing tracks in the studio and the rappers

added their vocals later. The next generation recorded their vocals at the same time as the musicians.
Q: How is the change? Did it get better or not? Why or why not?
A: Open question (One possible version: The second. Because it’s more convenient and efficient, since it saves more time.)
Q2: Why do you think the author listed so many countries cities in para.8-9? A: To prove that hip hop became popular.
To explain the process of development of hip hop. To emphasize the great influence hip hop made.
Q3: Is Ways of recording a suitable main idea for this part? A: No, it’s not comprehensive enough.
It should be Ways of Recording and the Development of Hip Hop.
So far, we have learned about hip hop from the aspects of definition, origin, breakthrough, reasons for success, ways of recording and development of hip hop. And let’s learn more about famous hip hop star and hip hop song.
7) Pair Work
Student A will receive materialA on your pad, and student B will receive material B. There will be one article and four questions about it on the material.
Task1 is to read your own material and find out the answers to the questions first. Task2 is to communicate with your partner about the other material. Later, you will be invited to answer the questions in detail.
Remember to make your partner fully understand your material. It’s a teamwork.

We’ve learned three articles about hip hop from these six aspects. What do you think we can learn from hip hop or hip hop artists?
