I:Teaching Aims  1.Language aims: 
(1)Important words and expressions 
brutal, fearless, fertile, hostile, invade, prosper, inhabitant, retreat, military, refer to...as..., in peace, convert...to..., needless to say, insist on doing, make peace (with sb.), in turn, in view of, be/become/get acquainted with (2)Important sentences 
a.The people who inhabited the North American continent before the arrival of the Europeans were once referred to as "Indians". 
b.Native Americans are believed to have come to North America from north-east Asia, arriving over a land bridge between Siberia and Alaska about 12,000 years ago. c.Only in 1868, after four terrible years were they allowed to return to their land. 2.Ability aims  
To enable students to learn something about the history of the Native Americans and improve reading skills by skimming and scanning. 3.Moral aims 
To enable students to learn to respect different ethnic groups and cultures II.Teaching important and difficult points 
 To help students analyze the structure of the passage and guide the students to talk about the history of the Native Americans. III.Teaching methods  
Inferring, predicting, skimming, scanning, and discussing. IV.Teaching aids  A computer. 
V.Teaching procedures  Step I  lead-in

Try to divide the passage into three parts and get main idea of each part. 2. Careful reading 
Read each part carefully and find the answers. Part one

1.Use the words and expressions learned to describe the first Americans.  2.To surf the Internet to collect more information about the first Americans.
