Analysis of the Teaching Material
This reading material comes from Book7 Unit 5 Travelling Abroad. The writing style of this text is news which is mainly introduces a Chinese student —Xie Lei who faced the difficulties while studying abroad for the first time. With the help of the host family and her tutor and her own effort, she went through four stages of culture shock, adapted to the new culture and finally fitted in well in London.
By learning the text, students can know more information about the culture shock of travelling abroad: the honeymoon stage(蜜月期)—the hostility stage(敵意期)—the recovery stage(恢復期)—the adjustment stage(適應期). The students needs to analyze how she faced the difficulties bravely and welcomed the challenges in life. There are some differences between Chinese and western culture, such as living habits, language education.etc. on the one hand, the teacher should guide the students to use critical thinking to analyze and know how to face the culture shock. On the other hand, the teacher should guide the students to use logical thinking to analyze the process of her fitting in and dig out her inner qualities in order to infiltrate moral education.
Analysis of the Students
The topic of this unit is Studying or Travelling Abroad, which is easy to arouse the students’ interests. As the passage is long with too many new words and phrases, the teacher designed the guided learning plan to lead the students to review the text and have a basic understanding of it.
Teaching Aims
According to the Key Competence of English,the teaching aims are designed from the following four aspects: linguistic competence、learning ability、cultural character and thinking quality,which Strives to integrate the four aspects.
1. Linguistic Competence:
(1)Skim the passage and grasp the writing style and the structure of this passage, then
summarize the general idea of it.
(2) Understand and apply the core vocabularies (board; preparation; recommend; qualification; comfort, beneficial; be occupied with; fit in well; have a balance; deserve to succeed; keep it up) into writing.
2. Learning Ability:
(1) Using the reading strategies of skimming, scanning and detailed reading by themselves to analyze Xie Lei’s experience of studying abroad and establish the consciousness of autonomous learning and life-long learning. (2) Solve the difficult and key points through group work.
3. Cultural Character:Analyze,compare and summarize the differences between Chinese and
western culture, and form their own culture stance and attitudes. 4. Thinking Quality:
(1)Critical thinking ability:Analyze,compare and summarize the differences between Chinese
and western culture, and know how to deal with the culture shock.
(2)Logical thinking ability:Analyze Xie Lei’s experience of studying abroad and try to dig out
her inner qualities and infiltrate moral education.

Step1: Lead-in (熱身導入,切入話題)
1. Look at the graph: Chinese students choose to study abroad in 2016 to lead in the topic of studying abroad.
2. Watch a video about a part of Michelle's speech to know more about studying abroad.
【Design Purpose: It is more visual and intuitionistic to lead in the topic by looking at a graph and
sharing a video. And the graph and the video can arouse the students’ interests and expectation in studying abroad. 】
Step2: Prediction (預測課文,初步感知)
Please look at the title and the picture on page 38 and skim the last paragraph, then predict: Writing style: _______

Then get the conclusion: This passage is a news release which is mainly about how Xie Lei fitting in well.

Step3: Structure Exploration (分析體裁, 把握框架)
The writing style usually contains the following parts: Title, Lead, Body and Conclusion. Skim the passage and divide the passage into the following parts:

Xie Lei had a mixture feeling(excited and nervous). She is excited about studying
in a new country and looks forward to her future.
This is Xie Lei’s honeymoon stage(留學蜜月期)of studying abroad.

And to all of us, growth is a life-long journey but not a predictable destination.

The teacher uses the proverbs to cultivate their consciousness of facing difficulties and life-long learning. 】
Step5: Body Exploration (主體探究,感悟“文化沖擊”) Para.2 : Preparation course Read paragraph and answer the question:
Why did Xie Lei do a preparation course first?
Because studying in England is different from studying in China and she needs to learn about these differences and improve her English. Conclusion: Preparation course promotes her fitting in.
Para3: Hostility Stage(留學敵意期)
Read para.3 carefully and finish the following two questions: 1. Translate the sentence: “It’s not just study that’s difficult” 困難不僅僅在學習方面。
So it indicates that there are many other difficulties.(暗示還有其他方面的困難) 2. Why did she feel like a child?
She had to learn how to use the phone, how to pay bus fare, and how to ask a shopkeeper for things I didn’t know the English for. When she got lost and had to ask a passer-by for directions, she didn’t always understand. They don’t talk like they do onour listening tapes.
It reflects the differences of _living habits and __language_ between Chinese and western culture.
Facing many difficulties, Xie Lei felt like a child. So this is her hostility stage(留學敵意期).
Para4: Recovery Stage(留學恢復期)
