Teaching aims and learning objectives:
By the end of the lesson, the students would be able to: 1. know maps and make simple maps of their city;
2. use words and sentences they have learned in Unit 2 and Unit 3 to introduce specific routes correctly;
3. get to know the meaning of “museum, restaurant, post office, bank”; 4. establish sense of ownership and learn to plan routes.
Focus of the lesson:
1. The students would be able to know maps and make simple maps of their city. 2. The students would be able to use words and sentences they have learned in Unit 2 and Unit 3 to introduce specific routes correctly.
Predicted areas of difficulty:
1. The students would be able to use words and sentences they have learned in Unit 2 and Unit 3 to introduce specific routes correctly.
2. The students would be able to establish sense of ownership and learn to plan routes.

Step Ⅰ Free talk and lead-in
1. Free talk.
T: I’m your new English teacher. I’m Miss Chen. You can also call Vicky, OK? Do you want to know something me? You can ask me some questions.
2. Show the topic of the lesson.
T: I live in Zhenjiang, but I come to Nanjing today to teach you a lesson. Nanjing is a beautiful city, right? Would you like to show me around your city Nanjing? So
today let’s learn “Project 1 Around our city”.
Teach: Project 1 Around our city
T: Today I bring some awards for you. These awards are for “City Stars”. In order to become “City Stars”, you need to work very hard to be the best guides, introduce your city to all of the teachers and win city star cards. Understand?
T: Good. Today we will talk about places, locations and routes around your city. Let’s start with places.
【設(shè)計意圖】通過師生對話了解新老師信息,結(jié)合評選“城市之星”,爭當“最 佳小導游”的主題,引出本課的話題Around our city。
Step Ⅱ Presentation
1. I know places.
Magic eyes: What can you see in the maps?
T: Magic eyes. Look and tell me “What can you see?”. You should look very carefully, because whatever you see, they’re all very useful. Understand? T: OK, let’s go! What can you see? What can you see in the maps? Review the names of places and learn new words.
Teach: Aqua City, post office, museum, gallery, senior high school,
kindergarten
Read the words together two times.

Ask and answer: Where are these places?
T: Where are these places? Where’s the museum? The museum is on Changjiang Street. So I think No. 1 is the museum.

T: Look at the maps, find the locations of these places. Try to use the dialogue like this. Understand?

T: Where’s your school? Where’s your home? (Where do you live?) How do you come to school from your home?(詢問ppt上呈現(xiàn)的地圖的制作者) I know routes: introduce routes from their homes to their school. Presents maps the students have made before.

T: Whose map is it? Please introduce the route for us. (板書:學生上來貼自己介紹的地圖) 【設(shè)計意圖】由三張含有不同任務(wù)的“城市之星”卡引入到學生作為“小導游”介紹城市地圖的話題討論。通過交流、猜測、匯報等復習與places, locations, routes有關(guān)的詞句,討論地標建筑的名稱、位置和從家出發(fā)到學校的路線,展現(xiàn)了學生正確認識地圖和根據(jù)地圖正確介紹具體路線的能力,也為后面的整體介紹打好了基礎(chǔ)。
Step Ⅲ Group work
1. Talk about the strategies about making a map.
T: Look at the maps here. What do you think of these maps? How do you make these … maps? Brain storm, think about “How to make a map?”.
(板書:學生說,老師在地圖A的方框內(nèi)用白色粉筆示范)
T: So to make a map, first, we should determine the direction of north, south, west and east. Next, we should draw the outline. Then, we should write down the names of the streets, draw the places or stick the pictures of them. Finally, we can decorate the map. Draw the bus stop, metro station, traffic lights and pavements on it. Now, we have nice maps(手指學生做的地圖說).
T: Do you want to make nice maps today? OK, let’s make maps. Today we will make four different maps. Group one, map A. Group two, map B. Group three, map C. Group four, map D. (板書:用紅色粉筆在方框內(nèi)寫A, B, C, D )
2. Group work:
Task A: Talk about the locations of the places and make maps.
T: Task A. Four students a group, talk about the locations of the places and make maps. Everyone has different jobs. Look, are you clear? Who’s A? I call, you put your hands up and say “Me!”. Understand? A, B, C, D, A and B, C and D. Do you know your jobs now? Good! Go, talk in groups.
T: It’s time to report. Who wants to try? Show your map and talk about the locations. (實物投影呈現(xiàn)學生要介紹的地圖)
Task B: Choose one destination, design the best routes and introduce. T: Let’s go on to talk about task B. Ask teachers to choose ways, design the best routes and introduce. A asks a teacher to choose the way. Here are so many teachers, go and ask them for help. You can use the sentence like this.(引導學生把句子齊讀出來)And don’t forget to write down the way on your map. B circles the locations, C draws the best route, D introduces the route, you can use the sentences here to introduce(手指板書). Are you clear, everyone? OK, go!
3. Report in groups.
T: Boys and girls, have you finished? Let’s report.

【設(shè)計意圖】在進行了關(guān)于places, locations, routes有關(guān)的話題討論之后,通過制作地圖的策略指導進入到小組合作制作地圖并整體介紹的環(huán)節(jié)。策略指導使學生理解制作地圖的基本步驟和方式,為后面的分組制作地圖提供了幫助,組內(nèi)分工合作則降低了整體介紹的難度,同時培養(yǎng)了合作意識和學會規(guī)劃路線的能力。
Step Ⅳ City Stars
1. Choose “City Stars”: the best guides
T: Well done, everyone! Thank you for your introductions. I think you’re all the best guides. Have you got any cards? Show me your cards. Oh, you’re all the city stars today. You can get my awards. Look, they’re the medals for city stars. Do you want them? Ask me for them after class, OK?
2. Try to remember: You are the owners of the city, the city becomes better because of you!
T: Boys and girls, today you show us around your city Nanjing.(板書:Around our city) You have a wonderful city.(指著整個板書說) And you should always remember “You are the owners of your city, the city becomes better because of you!”. 【設(shè)計意圖】通過評選“城市之星”,也就是“最佳小導游”的形式呼應本課主題并總結(jié),同時引導學生理解其實每個城市公民都是“城市之星”,都應該為自
己的城市做出貢獻,培養(yǎng)學生主人翁意識和熱愛城市、熱愛生活的積極態(tài)度。
Step Ⅴ Homework
1. Exchange maps and evaluate.
2. Write down the routes according to the maps. 3. Try to know other places and routes in Nanjing.
