Ⅰ. Teaching goals:
1. To let students learn some important words, phrases and sentences through skimming and scanning part.
2. To improve students’ reading ability through reading activities. 3. To let students express their feelings about hip hop actively. 4. To cultivate students’ awareness of cooperation.
5. To cultivate students’ awareness of enjoying the beautiful music.
Ⅱ. Analysis of the students
The students have learned some knowledge about music. This is a very interesting topic, so the students are enthusiastic about it. In addition, the students in this class are active and like to show themselves.

1. How to guide students understand the passage better and actively by using reading skills.
2. How to let Ss express their own opinion about hip hop by using the words and phrases learned in this passage correctly and actively. Ⅳ. Teaching methods
Step 1. Review (3 minutes)
Ask Ss to review the following words and phrases. (To check whether Ss have remembered the important words and phrases.)

Step 2. Lead-in (5 minutes)

2. Watch this piece of video and figure out its type of music. Step 3. Skimming (To get general ideas) (4 minutes)
Read the passage quickly and answer the following questions: 1. How many parts are there in this passage? 2. What’s the main idea of each part?
Part 1 A. The big breakthrough
Part 2 B. The reasons for its success
Part 3 C. The recording and spread of the rappers’ songs Part 4 D. The definition and origin of hip hop. Guide Ss to summarize reading strategies on how to skim. Tips: key words; subtitles; top sentences.
Step 4. Scanning (to get the detailed information)(17 minutes) 1. Read Part 1 of the passage again and fill in the blanks.
