一、Teaching objectives (教學目標)
基于高中英語課堂應充分發揮育人功能,發展學生的語言能力,文化品格,思維品質和學習能力等英語學科核心素養,落實立德樹人根本任務,本堂課的教學目標為: 1、語言能力
By the end of the class, students can remember some useful words and expressions, like species,rhino,poacher, horn, extinct. They will also be instructed to improve their reading skills such as how to understand the main idea of this reading passage by fast reading, how to apply approaches to find out the topic sentence and how to choose the best title. Furthermore, students will learn how to grasp the structure of the passage and guess the meaning of new words or phrases according to the situation.

With so many supplemental materials provided on this topic, students have got much information about wildlife protection, so they can work together to analyze the reasons why wildlife is being poached, which will enhance their understanding of wildlife protection. As a result, students will deepen their wildlife protection awareness.

Provide students with group activities which can make them learn to cooperate with others and carry out “exploratory learning”. Over the activities, I can monitor their learning state and process, putting emphasis on learning by themselves, learning by cooperating, and learning by exploring. The students should learn to evaluate their performance and learning strategics. They are expected to creative a similar writing on environmental protection which interests them most as homework.

1.Ss can develop their reading abilities, such as how to master the skill of choosing the best title by using topic sentences and key words.

“Look at the screen(Point at the title) What’s the tile of this unit? Yes, that is Wildlife Protection. Why should we protect wildlife? Why do they need protection? (Because they are in danger, because they are being killed by people. )Here I have a short video for you. Please watch carefully and try to remember the animals’ names and the reasons why they are killed by people.”
(After watching)“What animals are mentioned in the video? Why are they killed?” (bears for gall; turtles for shells; elephants for ivories; tigers for bones; rhinos for horns; write on the blackboard if necessary) “You see, so many animals are being killed and white rhinos are one of them. Just like other animals, white rhinos are being killed and their number is decreasing very quickly. If this continues, they will die out very soon. But luckily, some kind people are trying to save them. Let’s see what they are doing.”
設計意圖: 通過觀看一段獵殺野生動物的視頻并提出問題讓學生回答,從而迅速引出本課內容,同時也讓學生直觀地意識到其重要性和迫切性,為接下來的閱讀學習活動做好準備。

“Since we have got the main idea, it’s time for us to read more carefully to get more information.” Para1-2:

C. It has a wide mouth and is the largest species of rhinos. D. They live in the large national parks in Africa. E. The rhino horn is more valuable than gold.
設計意圖:基于高考對于事實細節的考查出現增多和變難的趨勢,訓練學生跨段落搜集信息,綜合多個信息以及準確判斷題目信息和原文信息意思相同但表達不一致的能力。 Para3:

Do you think only the poachers should be responsible for killing the rhinos? 設計意圖:推理判斷是閱讀理解中難度較大的一類,它最能考查學生的英語綜合運用能力。因此該部分重點訓練學生判斷作者意圖,分析前因后果,結合常識得出正確答案的能力。
Step 4 Discussion
Just as you said just now, not only the poachers should be responsible for killing the white rhinos, but also the people who want to buy rhino horns should also be responsible for it. Suppose you are a member of WWF(世界自然基金會),what do you think we should do to protect the wild animals? what do you think the

government should do to protect the wild animals? What do you want to say to the poachers/buyers?
(Choose one question and give at least two points)
Build a reserve for endangered animals. And then they can be protected form being killed.
Make laws to punish the poachers and the sellers as well as the buyers.
Tell people the importance of protecting wild animals via books, magazines, newspaper, TV, radio and Internet.
All the plants and animals are equal to we people. We should love each other and help each other.
Killing animals means killing ourselves. If we continue to kill animals like this, then we people will soon die out in the near future. People cannot live alone without other animals.
Never buy the goods made of wild animals! Remember: No buying, no killing! Encourage more people to join in protecting the wild animals!
Till now, many people haven’t realized the importance of protecting wild animals. Even worse, some people care about nothing but money. These people should be punished severely. .......
