小說閱讀
從初一到初二下,學(xué)生有了一定小說類文本閱讀量的積累,初一上進(jìn)行了校本自編教材Fiction Reading的推進(jìn),從加州教材Treasures中收錄了若干童話、神話、傳說等短篇閱讀篇章,初一下和初二上,利用寒暑假的時(shí)間閱讀了英文原版小說Charlie and the Chocolate Factory和The BFG。語文學(xué)科也有一些必讀書目,從而學(xué)生有一些共同的小說閱讀經(jīng)歷,比如《魯濱遜漂流記》《湯姆.索亞》《海底兩萬里》《三體》《小王子》《駱駝祥子》《水滸》《狼圖騰》,也有一些個(gè)性化的閱讀,比如Harry Potter,My Sister’s Keeper,Lord of the Flies,The Great Blue Yonder,Jane Eyre,Pride and Prejudice…
小說分析
關(guān)于分析小說,學(xué)生也積累了一些經(jīng)驗(yàn),每學(xué)期開學(xué)伊始的兩周會(huì)集中分析假期讀過的小說,

小說的分析主要從四個(gè)角度展開,人物分析、情節(jié)分析、主題分析、語言分析。
1) 人物分析,主要通過分析看得到的人物外貌、語言、動(dòng)作,挖掘看不見的人物心情、人物思想、
人物品質(zhì)、人物變化和人物關(guān)系;
2) 情節(jié)分析,主要抓住小說的幾個(gè)要素,主要人物在特定環(huán)境下發(fā)生的事,但是因?yàn)樾≌f相對(duì)于
短篇故事來說人物和情節(jié)更為復(fù)雜,所以我們可以將小說的情節(jié)發(fā)展分為幾個(gè)階段,exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution,然后按照小說發(fā)展的階段逐一分析此階段的時(shí)間、地點(diǎn)、人物和主要事件,最后小說的情節(jié)脈絡(luò)就比較清晰了;
3) 主題分析,通過一些可視化的思維路徑挖掘小說主題,比如Cause& Effect Chain,不斷挖掘結(jié)
果背后的原因,層層接近小說的核心主題。還可以設(shè)計(jì)一些基本問題,通過對(duì)基本問題的探討,不斷挖掘小說主題。同時(shí),用 “Find the perfect quote to float your boat.”或者 “What do you read that makes you say that?”去追問學(xué)生,從而進(jìn)行有理有據(jù)的表達(dá);
4) 語言分析,對(duì)于初中階段的學(xué)生,metaphors和similes對(duì)于他們理解小說,或者在日常寫作中
進(jìn)行形象表達(dá)都有非常大的幫助,這些修辭之前進(jìn)行過專題學(xué)習(xí)。
有了以上的積淀,本單元聚焦小說的交流也就水到渠成,而交流的目的是為了分享,分享是為了遇見下一本自己想讀的好書。所以本單元的主題定為:Share What We’ve Read & Meet What We Want to Read. 教材分析
本單元是人教版教材八年級(jí)下冊(cè)Unit 8 Have you read Treasure Island yet?本單元話題是文學(xué),文學(xué)可以分為詩歌、散文和小說等,本單元主要聚焦小說,教材中主要呈現(xiàn)了《愛麗絲夢(mèng)游仙境》《小婦人》《魯濱遜漂流記》《金銀島》《湯姆索亞歷險(xiǎn)記》《霧都孤兒》等六本經(jīng)典小說的場(chǎng)景片段,其目的不僅僅在于讓學(xué)生了解這些文學(xué)作品的名稱、內(nèi)容及相關(guān)的語言知識(shí),同時(shí)還希望通過與文學(xué)作品相關(guān)的聽說讀寫活動(dòng),激發(fā)學(xué)生對(duì)英語語言文化的興趣,學(xué)會(huì)如何與人探討和交流文學(xué)作品,發(fā)表自己的觀點(diǎn)和看法,從而提高學(xué)生的文學(xué)素養(yǎng)和人文素養(yǎng)。
向別人推薦一本小說,自然要介紹書的主要內(nèi)容,關(guān)于這一點(diǎn),教材中有若干范例,比如 The Little Women is about four sisters growing up. Tom Sawyer is about a boy who lives in the United States.
Treasure Island is about a boy who goes out to sea and finds an island full of treasures. 通過觀察這幾個(gè)示例,學(xué)生可以在一定程度上總結(jié)出歸納概括小說主要內(nèi)容的方法,但由于過于簡短,滿足不了不同水平學(xué)生的需求,所以在這方面做了一定的拓展:
Tom Sawyer is about a young orphan boy living on the banks of the Mississippi River. Robinson Crusoeis about a man who is shipwrecked on a desert island, lives off the land for 35
years.
Oliver Twist is about an orphanwho runs away from the workhouse, is taken in by a group of
thieves and is finally adopted by a gentleman.

Alice in Wonderland is abouta young girl who falls through a rabbit hole and gets transported to
another land where she meets characters like the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter.
除了介紹小說的主要內(nèi)容之外,向別人推薦時(shí),更主要的是加上自己的評(píng)論,但是如何寫書評(píng),相比較歸納概括小說主要內(nèi)容,對(duì)學(xué)生來說是一個(gè)更大的挑戰(zhàn)。Goodreads這個(gè)應(yīng)用,其創(chuàng)建的主要目的就是為了滿足讀書愛好者總在尋找下一本好書的需求,其宗旨是Meet your next favorite book. 上面有大量的書評(píng),而且評(píng)論來自大眾讀者,評(píng)論的質(zhì)量介于專業(yè)書評(píng)和寥寥幾句泛泛評(píng)論之間,正好符合初中生的閱讀水平。
《小王子》是當(dāng)下語文學(xué)科共同閱讀的一本小說,所以關(guān)于書評(píng),鎖定The Little Prince,從海量評(píng)論中,梳理出書評(píng)的幾個(gè)角度,比如Feelings while reading,Ideas the writer wants to convey,Influence the book has made on me,并且整理出結(jié)構(gòu)相對(duì)良好的閱讀材料,供學(xué)生閱讀發(fā)現(xiàn)書評(píng)的角度和可遷移的語言(詳見課時(shí)教學(xué)設(shè)計(jì)):

beyond it.
Step 3 How to give a book description
How to give a book description? Big strong said it was impossible to summarize a novel of one
hundred thousand words with only three to five sentences. After this class maybe we will make it.
Read the following book descriptions. Match them with the book title. Circle the clues.
Book Recommendation
Book title: The Great Blue Yonder
Book description: This novel tells a story of Harry who is killed in an traffic accident. After going to the heaven, he flies back to his
school and his family.
Comment: While I am reading this book, I regard myself as the little Harry to experience death. We are afraid of death as much
as Harry. But death can teach us the value of life. Let's cherish life together. This book will affect your opinion of life
and death.

Play a game named: Guess the Book Title. One gives a book description. The other group members
guess the book title. Give a model first:
The story is set in the Song Dynasty.
It is the adventure of a band of 108 heroes (105 men and 3 women).
They gather at Mount Liang, form an army and fight against the government in the name of
the Emperor.
Ask the question: What do you read that makes you say it’s Shuihu? Circle the characters, time, place,
cause and process in it.

Step 4 How to give a book review.
You have finished reading The Little Prince. What do you think of The Little Prince? (Ask an average
student. Expect the answer like this “It’s very interesting and exciting.”)
Read the three pieces of comments from the app “Goodreads”. Answer the following question: Do
you think the Little Prince is a great book according to the following comments? Circle the clues. Walk around the classroom. Find out who has circled the key words in the topic sentence. Ask him or
her and write down the aspects on the blackboard: Feelings Ideas Changes
Read for the second time and underline thefeelings, ideas, changes in the comments. Share them with
group members.
Analyze the feeling, ideas and changes in the comments and write down some sentence patterns on

Step 4 Presentation
Share the book recommendation in the group and choose one to recommend in the whole class.
Collect students’ recommendations before the class. Show them and ask students to choose which one
they want to hear the most. The first one gives his or her book recommendations including book description and comment. The second one needs to give a feedback whether she or he wants to read it and why or why not.

I was sad for the little prince and his proud rose, and worried whether the goat would eat it. I was sorry when the fox and prince had to separate. And I broke down and cried at the end. I haven't read anything like this before.

This is a book of just about 80 pages, but the idea in it is far, far greater.
The Little Prince character is just great. He questions everything he sees or hears. This book is also a perfect message for grown-upswho spend too much of their lives focusing on the wrong things. It lets us, who have read it, understand that life is more than just that. One should love living his life. And one should care for others.

It also reminds me of being myself. Everything really changes as I go into a world of debate between me and myself. It reminds me to stop, look up into the sky to see the stars and I can see myself more clearly and make sure that the Little Me still remains.
