The General Idea of This Period:
This period includes Leading up,Reading and Comprehending of the reading text in Unit 2. It introduces the similarities and differences between ancient and modern Olympic Games in the form of an interesting interview between Pausanias, a Greek writer 2000 years ago and Li Yan, a Chinese girl living at the present time. Reading the passage, the students can learn some reading strategies such as skimming, scanning and careful reading. Teaching Aims: Knowledge aims:
1. To help students compare the ancient Olympics with the modern ones and try to answer the questions quickly and correctly so that they can learn how to generalize and compare the similarities and differences.
2. To make students understand the text and learn some useful words and expressions:medal, admit, take part in, replace, prize, a set of, interview, as well as, athlete, compete with/against/for, etc. Ability aims:
1. To get students’ reading abilities improved.
2. To help students use different reading skills properly and correctly. 3. To develop students’ cooperative learning skill. Emotion aims:
1. To get students to know the spirit of the Olympic Games and learn from it. 2. To develop students’ awareness of cooperation. Teaching Important Points:
1. To help students compare the ancient Olympics with the modern ones and have a clear idea of heir similarities and differences.
2. To help students master the reading skills: skimming, scanning and careful reading. 3. To develop students’ positive attitudes towards life. Teaching Difficult Points:
1. How to find the implied similarities and differences correctly and learn about the spirit of the Olympic Games.
2. To help students use the reading skills correctly and freely. Teaching Methods:
1. Skimming to get the general idea of the text.
2. Scanning to get detailed information and get to understand the passage better.
3. Task-based method and group discussion to get the students to comprehend the passage and be able to find the implied similarities and differences between the ancient and modern Olympics. Teaching Aids:

Teaching procedure: 1. Leading in (3minutes)
Show students some short videos of the Olympics before class. When class begins, ask students the following questions:
(1) We have watched some short videos. Do you know what they are about?
(2) Show students the Five Rings Flag of the Olympics and ask students the question: “Can you tell me what the five rings on the flag stand for?”
Answer: The five rings joined together stand for the unity, equality, open and friendship of five continents (blue--Europe, black--Africa, red--America, yellow--Asia, green--Oceania). Besides, the background color: white stands for peace.
(3) What’s the motto of the Olympics? Swifter, Higher, Stronger.
Purpose: to stimulate students’ background knowledge of the Olympics and be prepared for the following steps. 2. Reading
(1) Ask students to read the title and the first paragraph of the text and try to find the following information (3 minutes): Title: An Interview
Who: Pausanias (A Greek writer) & Li Yan (A volunteer for the 2008 Olympics) When: on March 18th, 2007
Purpose: to find out about the present-day Olympic Games
(2) Skimming: to go through the text quickly to get the main idea of the text. (3 minutes) Task one: to go through the text quickly to get the general idea, and then tick (√) the information mentioned in the text.

Task Two: to summarize the main idea, using the information above. This interview is mainly about ______.

(3) Scanning: to get some detailed(詳細的) information you need to know. That is to say, go over the questions or the sentences first and try to find the key words. Next, go through the text as quick as possible to find the sentences with the key words and read it carefully. (瀏覽問題找關鍵詞,跳讀文章并細讀關鍵詞所在的句子)
Practice: Scan the text to find whether they are True or False. (13 minutes)
Are these statements true or false? Underline the key words in each sentence and tick the correct brackets and. If it is wrong, please state your reason. (Requirements: 5minutes is given; underline the key words in each statement; if you find the answers, please mark the numbers; part of the students will be asked to share their opinions.)
