Analysis of the teaching material:
The topic of this unit is Why don’t you talk to your parents? This unit is designed to teach students how to express problems and give advice. This lesson is closely related to students’ daily lives. From talking about daily problems and related language,words and expressions, students can learn to solve their problems and realize the importance of communication. Analysis of the students:
Students in Grade 8 are eager to get new information. And they’re easy to feel stressed. The key point of this unit is how to solve problems and communicate with parents. In this unit ,students will learn to express problems, give advice and get on well with others. Teaching aims:
Knowledge Objectives: By the end of this class, Ss will be able to talk about
problems and give advice.
Ability Objectives: By the end of this class, Ss’ listening, speaking, reading and
writing skills will be trained.
Moral Objectives: By the end of this class, Ss learn to get on with others and know
the importance of communication.
Type of lesson: A new lesson Class period: 40minutes
Important points: a) Ss learn to use key patterns to talk about problems and give
advice.
b) Students learn some reading strategies.
Difficult points: How to use the key vocabulary and patterns to describe one’s
feelings and give advice.
Teaching methods: a) Task-based method;
b) Situational communicative approach Learning methods:
a) Ss are encouraged to speak freely.
b) Ss are guided to learn some reading strategies; c) Ss are led to use the target language correctly.
Resources of teaching: Teacher’s book Students’ book & chalk Teaching procedures: Step1: Lead-in
1. Let students watch a video which talks about the contradiction between a teenager and his mother.
2. Discuss some questions about this video. Step 2: Read the text
1. Look through the passage and answer these questions:
①. Where do you usually find these letters? ②. Who do you think has a problem? ③. Who is giving advice?
2. First reading
Listen to the tape carefully and find out Sad and Thirteen’s problems and Mr. Hunt’s advice.
3. Second reading
Read the passage again and discuss the question: Do you agree or disagree with Mr. Hunt’s advice? 4. Third reading
Ask two students to read these letters and then answer following questions: . What do the writer’s parents do at home?
. What is the writer’s home like when his parents argue? . What does the writer’s brother do to him?
④. What is Robert Hunt’s advice to help stop the writer’s parents from fighting?
⑤. What is Robert Hunt’s advice on how to get on with the writer’s brother?
Step 3: Read the key words after the teacher Step 4: Exercise: Fill the blanks Step 5: Pair work
Make a conversation between Sad and Thirteen and Mr. Hunt. Step 6: Writing
Write about how to get on well with your parents. Try to use the expressions that we have learned today. Step 7: Show time Step 8: Wise words Step 9: Homework
