1.Ss can retell the characteristics of the four periods in western painting. 2.Ss can improve their reading ability using scanning and skimming. ●Emotional aims
1.Ss can appreciate some of western paintings.
2.Develop students’ cross–culture consciousness, and arouse their interest in learning more about western culture. 2.Teaching important points

Present some Chinese paintings and western paintings to lead in the lesson. 2. Showing the learning aims
1). To use the following important words and phrases to describe western painting, such as religious, realistic, humanistic, perspective, shadow, ridiculous, abstract, etc.
2). To find out the characteristics of four periods in western painting. 3). To retell the passage using what has been learned in this lesson. Step2 Reading
The following is the mode of the plan for students. Students are demanded to finish Task2 and Task3. Task1. Skimming
Read the title of the text and four subtitles to get the main idea. How many periods are there in western painting? And what are they? Task2. Careful reading (work in groups of four)
Read the passage carefully and fill in the following four charts.

Task 3. Fill in the blacks to check if you have understood the passage well. During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes, showing respect and love for God. In the Renaissance, people adopted a humanistic attitude. Masaccio used perspective in his paintings, which made

paintings more realistic. Besides, oil paints developed.The Impressionists were the first to paint outdoors and they showed light and shadow falling on objects. The paintings were ridiculous and not detailed.Today people accept Impressionism as the beginning of modern art. Some modern paintings are abstract while some are realistic.
