Reading Puzzles in Geography
整體設計思路
本節課包括熱身(Warming up)、讀前活動(Pre-reading)、讀中活動(While-reading)和讀后活動(Post-reading)。首先,圍繞The United Kingdom這一話題,通過看視頻,問問題,小測試及頭腦風暴的形式展開讀前的熱身活動,并用媒體圖片展示,以激活學生對于這一話題的背景知識和興趣,為“讀”做好鋪墊;然后,用英國的全稱導入本節課的話題并輔之以英國地圖,讓學生在讀前對英國的現有組成部分有所了解并通過課文標題和文中圖片對課文內容進行預測;再然后,通過設計活動展開閱讀教學活動,讓學生通過略讀、尋讀、細讀、研讀四個環節,完成概括大意,填補文章,問題等閱讀任務,了解文章的主旨和細節以及篇章結構等信息。使學生理解課文,了解英國文化,并培養學生的如skimming, scanning等閱讀技能,形成良好的閱讀策略;最后,在post-reading這一環節,設計活動(讓學生創建自己的思維導圖和role play)旨在總結應用,以用固讀,讓學生結合所學的課文,聯系實際生活進行語言實踐活動,并通過課外寫作延伸閱讀,提升學生的綜合運用語言能力。

Enjoy a short video, and then have a free talk about the topic: The United Kingdom.
What can you see in the video?
Ask the Ss to enjoy some pictures and try to name them, and then do a quiz to check how much the Ss know about the UK. Step 2 Pre-reading
Talk about the full name of the UK and the capital cities of each country. Step 3 While-reading 1. Fast-reading
Skim the text, match the main idea of each para, then divide the passage into three parts and try to write down the main idea of each part. 2. Careful reading Deal with each part
Part 1. How was the UK formed? (Ask the Ss to read Para2 loudly.)
Analyze from 3 aspects: Geography, history and the government’s responsibilities Part 2: Knowing England (Ask the Ss to listen to Para4.)
Guide the Ss to divide the England into 3 zones and find out the characteristics of each zone.
Part 3: London (Ask the Ss to read Para5 and then discuss with their partners.) A. Explain the meaning of the sentence: If a man is tired of London, he is tired of life. ---Samuel Johnson
B. Who were the 4 invaders and what they left?
A debate about whether the invasion is good if time permits. Step 4: Post-reading
Task 1: Ask the students to create their own mind maps and invite one student to write on the blackboard. After writing, share his mind map with the whole class. Task 2: Group work
In each group, one student acts as a tour guide to introduce the UK to the visitors acted by the rest group members. Homework
Encourage the Ss to collect information about Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Share the information in the next class.
