Target Students: Class 17, Senior Two, Xiamen No.1 High School Title: The World’s Most Useful Gift Catalogue Lesson Type: Using language Analysis of Students:
The students are from Senior Two of the key high school, who have a good command of basic reading skills as well as spoken English. They are enthusiastic about English and willing to express their thoughts. Moreover, they have already learnt a passage named A Letter Home, which is about a volunteer teacher’s experience. As a result, they have some knowledge in terms of Sharing and helping people in need. However, students still need some training on how to make clear about the organization and get the idea of a web page passage like this. Moreover, they still need some activities to improve their creative thinking and deepen their insight into their social responsibility. Analysis of Teaching Material:
The article The World’s Most Useful Gift Catalogue ( NSEFC Book7 ) is a web page, telling how people can contact this web and buy gifts to help people in need. It includes a gift catalogue which people can purchase a gift from as well as a specially designed card which the buyer will get and give to his/her loved person. It aims to highlight individual’s contribution to helping others through this website and inspire people to spread the charitable act and the idea of sharing. In order to improve Ss’ ability to read such kind of passage and think critically, the teacher get the students to participate in analyzing the structure and finding out the main idea of each part, answering questions concerning the content of each part, discussing the purpose of the specially designed card as well as associating the passage with their daily life activity—“薪火相傳”, thus creating opportunities for them to make some real life relevant thinking, providing the students with the chances of presentation and developing their insight into the social responsibility.
Teaching Aims:
By the end of the class, Ss will be able to
1. have a clear idea of the structure of the passage and how this gift catalogue organization works. 2. use the proper expressions to introduce the gift.
3. complete the task through group work and helping each other.
4. improve their sense of social responsibility and awareness of sharing
Teaching Important Points:
1. Enable the students to better understand and analyze the reading material
2. Guide Ss to work in group, solve problem through critically thinking and develop their insight into their social responsibility.
Teaching Difficult Points:
Guide the students to discover the truth through analyzing the facts.

Step I Lead-in
1. Get Ss to talk about birthday gifts they give to their friends, which Ss are so familiar with, to introduce “The world’s most useful gift catalogue”
T: What gifts do you give to your friends for their birthday? S1: … S2: … …
2. show student a video clip about charity water. 3. discover the unusual function birthday gifts have.
【設計意圖】 播放一小段charity water組織最初從創始人生日禮物開始,引導學生們發現禮物的其他用途也是更有價值的用途,從而引出本篇文章The world’s most useful gift catalogue。
Step II Pre-reading
1.ask Ss where is the page from by looking at the layout
2.ask Ss to predict what may be talked about in the passage by just looking at the title and the pictures T: Look at the four blue buttons. Where do you think the page is from? Ss:……
T: look at the title and those people. What will be page about?
【設計意圖】 根據標題預測文章內容,訓練學生的預測能力,培養學生關注文章標題的意識。預測在閱讀中不僅能幫助學生準確把握焦點,培養邏輯思維能力和判斷能力,還大大地激發學生的閱讀興趣,提高閱讀效果。
Step III Reading 1. Skimming
1) Get Ss to skim the passage to find out how many parts it consists of. 2) Ask Ss to sum up the main idea of each part.
【設計意圖】在略讀部分讓學生驗證自己的預測答案正確與否,同時找出主題,快速把握文章結構。 2. Careful reading
Focus on each part and solve the specific problems:
Part 1. Understand the purpose of the page;
T: Focus on the first part. Find out what (is the page for), who ( are the gifts aimed at) and why(people buy gift from the catalogue)
Part 2. Understand what each gift is for;
T: Read through the catalogue and match the gifts with the descriptions on P. 35.
Part 3. Understand the special design of the card;
T: Focus on the card and find out who is the card aimed at and what we can learn from P ara.2 of the card.
【設計意圖】幫助學生識別文章的文體特征,引導學生重點關注篇章結構,借此培養策略意識。通過對卡片的深入解讀引導學生發現卡片設計的意圖,即將慈善的理念傳遞給更多的人。培養學生的社會參與意識,引發學對文中內涵有更深刻的理解。
Step IV Presentation
1.ask Ss to work in groups of four to choose a gift for the students in Tibet.
2.ask Ss to give a presentation to introduce the gift.

【設計意圖】讓學生聯系本校一年一度的薪火相傳活動為西藏地區的孩子們選一件禮物,不僅是在真實語境下的語言輸出,同時又喚起了學生們的社會關愛意識。通過小組合作促進合作與參與能力的培養,為今后的學習和參與社會實踐提供了方法和啟發。
Step VII Homework
1. Write a 120-word letter to the Students Union to give suggestions on how to spend the money raised through the Charity Sales and give your reasons.
【設計意圖】寫作作業是課堂內容的延伸,給學生一個深入思考和探究的空間,同時提高他們社會關愛意識,促進學生們在今后的學習中自主地進行創新實踐。
