小說閱讀
從初一到初二下,學生有了一定小說類文本閱讀量的積累,初一上進行了校本自編教材Fiction Reading的推進,從加州教材Treasures中收錄了若干童話、神話、傳說等短篇閱讀篇章,初一下和初二上,利用寒暑假的時間閱讀了英文原版小說Charlie and the Chocolate Factory和The BFG。語文學科也有一些必讀書目,從而學生有一些共同的小說閱讀經歷,比如《魯濱遜漂流記》《湯姆.索亞》《海底兩萬里》《三體》《小王子》《駱駝祥子》《水滸》《狼圖騰》,也有一些個性化的閱讀,比如Harry Potter,My Sister’s Keeper,Lord of the Flies,The Great Blue Yonder,Jane Eyre,Pride and Prejudice…
小說分析
關于分析小說,學生也積累了一些經驗,每學期開學伊始的兩周會集中分析假期讀過的小說,

小說的分析主要從四個角度展開,人物分析、情節分析、主題分析、語言分析。
1) 人物分析,主要通過分析看得到的人物外貌、語言、動作,挖掘看不見的人物心情、人物思想、
人物品質、人物變化和人物關系;
2) 情節分析,主要抓住小說的幾個要素,主要人物在特定環境下發生的事,但是因為小說相對于
短篇故事來說人物和情節更為復雜,所以我們可以將小說的情節發展分為幾個階段,exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution,然后按照小說發展的階段逐一分析此階段的時間、地點、人物和主要事件,最后小說的情節脈絡就比較清晰了;
3) 主題分析,通過一些可視化的思維路徑挖掘小說主題,比如Cause& Effect Chain,不斷挖掘結
果背后的原因,層層接近小說的核心主題。還可以設計一些基本問題,通過對基本問題的探討,不斷挖掘小說主題。同時,用 “Find the perfect quote to float your boat.”或者 “What do you read that makes you say that?”去追問學生,從而進行有理有據的表達;
4) 語言分析,對于初中階段的學生,metaphors和similes對于他們理解小說,或者在日常寫作中
進行形象表達都有非常大的幫助,這些修辭之前進行過專題學習。
有了以上的積淀,本單元聚焦小說的交流也就水到渠成,而交流的目的是為了分享,分享是為了遇見下一本自己想讀的好書。所以本單元的主題定為:Share What We’ve Read & Meet What We Want to Read. 教材分析
本單元是人教版教材八年級下冊Unit 8 Have you read Treasure Island yet?本單元話題是文學,文學可以分為詩歌、散文和小說等,本單元主要聚焦小說,教材中主要呈現了《愛麗絲夢游仙境》《小婦人》《魯濱遜漂流記》《金銀島》《湯姆索亞歷險記》《霧都孤兒》等六本經典小說的場景片段,其目的不僅僅在于讓學生了解這些文學作品的名稱、內容及相關的語言知識,同時還希望通過與文學作品相關的聽說讀寫活動,激發學生對英語語言文化的興趣,學會如何與人探討和交流文學作品,發表自己的觀點和看法,從而提高學生的文學素養和人文素養。
向別人推薦一本小說,自然要介紹書的主要內容,關于這一點,教材中有若干范例,比如 The Little Women is about four sisters growing up. Tom Sawyer is about a boy who lives in the United States.
Treasure Island is about a boy who goes out to sea and finds an island full of treasures. 通過觀察這幾個示例,學生可以在一定程度上總結出歸納概括小說主要內容的方法,但由于過于簡短,滿足不了不同水平學生的需求,所以在這方面做了一定的拓展:
Tom Sawyer is about a young orphan boy living on the banks of the Mississippi River. Robinson Crusoeis about a man who is shipwrecked on a desert island, lives off the land for 35
years.
Oliver Twist is about an orphanwho runs away from the workhouse, is taken in by a group of
thieves and is finally adopted by a gentleman. 3
Alice in Wonderland is abouta young girl who falls through a rabbit hole and gets transported to
another land where she meets characters like the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter.
除了介紹小說的主要內容之外,向別人推薦時,更主要的是加上自己的評論,但是如何寫書評,相比較歸納概括小說主要內容,對學生來說是一個更大的挑戰。Goodreads這個應用,其創建的主要目的就是為了滿足讀書愛好者總在尋找下一本好書的需求,其宗旨是Meet your next favorite book. 上面有大量的書評,而且評論來自大眾讀者,評論的質量介于專業書評和寥寥幾句泛泛評論之間,正好符合初中生的閱讀水平。
《小王子》是當下語文學科共同閱讀的一本小說,所以關于書評,鎖定The Little Prince,從海量評論中,梳理出書評的幾個角度,比如Feelings while reading,Ideas the writer wants to convey,Influence the book has made on me,并且整理出結構相對良好的閱讀材料,供學生閱讀發現書評的角度和可遷移的語言(詳見課時教學設計):

How to give a book description? Big strong said it was impossible to summarize a novel of one
hundred thousand words with only three to five sentences. After this class maybe we will make it.
Read the following book descriptions. Match them with the book title. Circle the clues.

Play a game named: Guess the Book Title. One gives a book description. The other group members

You have finished reading The Little Prince. What do you think of The Little Prince? (Ask an average

Read the three pieces of comments from the app “Goodreads”. Answer the following question: Do
you think the Little Prince is a great book according to the following comments? Circle the clues. Walk around the classroom. Find out who has circled the key words in the topic sentence. Ask him or
her and write down the aspects on the blackboard: Feelings Ideas Changes
Read for the second time and underline thefeelings, ideas, changes in the comments. Share them with
group members.
Analyze the feeling, ideas and changes in the comments and write down some sentence patterns on
