Teaching Material:
NSEFC Module 4 Unit 3 A Master of Nonverbal Humor-- Reading Target Students:
Students of Class One, Grade One from Tongxiang High School. Analysis On Students:
Students of Tongxiang High School have a good command of English. They are eager to learn something knowledgeable and interesting. They have their own opinions and attitudes and they are willing to share, thus making the atmosphere of the lesson rather active. Besides, they can well understand the teacher’s instructions and follow it accordingly. But as Senior One students, their vocabulary is quite limited and they tend to compromise with the difficulties occurred in their life. So I must try my best to help them develop their sense of humor and adopt an optimistic attitude towards life. Teaching Objectives:
Knowledge
1. Students will be able to learn the following new words and expressions in the certain contexts: humor, verbal, nonverbal, mime, comedy, brighten, depressed, tramp, throughout, moustache, worn-out, failure, optimism,
snowstorm, leather, lace, mouthful, chew, enjoyment, pick out, cut off etc. 2. Students will be able to know the life experience and career of Charlie Chaplin.
Ability
Students’ reading, speaking, and writing skills can be trained and
improved when they complete their tasks by using the target language. Emotion
After learning this lesson, students will develop their own sense of humor
and adopt an optimistic attitude towards life.
Strategy
To guess the meaning of new words according to certain contexts.
To solve problems through team-work.
Teaching focus and difficulties: 1. Focus:
The way Charlie Chaplin and his character drive “winter away” from the human face as well as Charlie Chaplin’s performance in one of his most famous films. 2. Difficult points:
Help students to work out the “winter” of people living in two world wars, the “winter” of Chaplin’s childhood and the “winter” of the little tramp, and analyse how they drive it away. Thus they can summarize the text after class.
Help students understand the humor and optimism of the little tramp and help him to persuade his friend to be optimistic. Teaching Method:
1. Task-based Teaching Approach 2. Communicative Approach Teaching Aids:
PPT, blackboard, chalks, a leather shoe, a plate, a fork, a knife and an Oscar trophy.
Teaching procedures:
Step 1 warming up and Lead-in 1. A guessing game
Guess some famous people with the descriptions given.
1. Guo Degang—crosstalk 2 .Zhou Xingchi—comedy 3. Rowan Atkinson—mime 【設計意圖】猜一猜的游戲一方面能夠點燃課堂氣氛,激發學生參與課堂活動的欲望;另一方面,也預熱了部分課文中重點詞匯,引入了單元話題。同時,在猜名人的過程中,教師通過追問“他們分別擅長什么”得到“crosstalk” “comedy” “mime”等詞,為下一步作比較得出不同形式的幽默做了鋪墊。 2. Discussion

【設計意圖】通過比較三位名人,得出他們都能給人帶來幽默,使人發笑的共同點。通過追問Do they make us laugh in the same way?得出兩種不同形式的幽默,即verbal humor和nonverbal humor, 為學生掃清生詞障礙。在此基礎上,教師以一句“Today, we are going to learn a master of nonverbal humor”自然過渡到文本閱讀環節。

He brightened lives of Americans and British through two world wars by making them laugh at a time when they felt depressed.
【設計意圖】細讀第一段,找出卓別林幫助兩次世界大戰中的人們驅散“冬天”的方法,理解文章主線:Humor can drive winter away. 同時,通過對depressed的理解,更加豐富“winter”的含義。 Para 2
① Can you find out Chaplin’ s “winter” in childhood? ② How did he drive his “winter” away? 【設計意圖】第一問使學生理解卓別林童年時期所遇到的困難和悲傷;第二問使學生理解卓別林以自己的幽默度過了人生的低潮,成了一名優秀的演員。這兩個問題的結合,再次顯現了文章主線:Humor can drive winter away. 并自然過渡到第三段對經典角色的學習。 Para 3

【設計意圖】首先通過板書再次梳理文章主要內容,并強調文章主線“Humor can
drive winter away”以及卓別林和他的角色對這條主線的詮釋,有利于學生完成課后概要寫作任務。然后通過PPT動畫,從文章內容總結過渡到文本意義總結,即:每個人都有他的“winter”,我們需要保持幽默,經常微笑,因為正如雨果所說,“Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face. ”只有這樣,我們才能保持樂觀積極的態度。從而為下一環節的寫作和表演奠定基礎。
2. Creation:Suppose you are the little tramp, try to persuade your friend to be optimistic and enjoy the meal. 【設計意圖】學生通過之前閱讀第四段積累了吃皮鞋過程的一些語料,本環節中學生將這些敘述性的語言轉變為對話,并加入自己的創意,來說服the little tramp的同伴來保持樂觀,并以表演的方式加以呈現。由此,學生既可以學會用自己的樂觀幽默去幫助別人,帶給人歡樂,又可以通過表演再次感受卓別林的精彩演技。 3. Sharing: Blank-filling
【設計意圖】通過填空,再次凸顯全文主”humor can drive winter away”,使得文本理解進入高潮,也為學生課后生成自己的座右銘來應對困難做了鋪墊和示范。
Step 5 Homework
1.Write a summary of Charlie Chaplin's life experience and contribution with no more than 80 words. Try to use the information you learned today.
2.Come up with a motto (座右銘) to help you undertake the difficult times.
