Analysis of the teaching materials: 
本文出自蕭伯納的戲劇劇作《賣花女》（Pygmalion），講述了說話不饒人的語言學(xué)家Henry Higgins與友人打賭，要在六個月之內(nèi)，將滿口鄉(xiāng)音、在倫敦街頭賣花的少女Eliza Doolittle改造成大家閨秀，出席上流社會的舞會而不被揭發(fā)。Eliza通過Henry一連串的發(fā)音及儀態(tài)訓(xùn)練，最終被改造成優(yōu)雅貴婦。本節(jié)選為Henry和友人打賭的一幕。文本中人物對話靈動風(fēng)趣，性格沖突明顯，通過賞讀此文本，學(xué)生能直白地感受到不同人物性格特征的極大差異，體會到作者語言中用詞的精妙，品味語言背后作者對于當(dāng)時英國的腐朽保守的等級意識的抨擊，對于質(zhì)樸善良的高尚人性的贊美，和對于丑惡虛假的諷刺。  
Teaching aims:

1. students will have had a thorough comprehension of the story by analyzing the setting, plots, characters and theme. 
2. students will have learned to appreciate the genuine language of the literature works and taste the emotion of the characters. 
3. students will have been inspired to think over and realize one’s inner qualities are more important than the external merits.

1. Setting 
Skim the passage and find out the characters, time, place of the scene and the content of the bet.  
The main idea: Henry Higgins and Colonel Pickering made a bet to pass Elisa off as a lady through speech lessons. 
【設(shè)計意圖】通過找到故事的基本要素獲得對文章整體的初步了解, 點出題中的關(guān)鍵詞bet，文章是圍繞bet這一詞為主線展開的，所以先讓學(xué)生抓住此詞能幫助他們快速獲得故事的梗概。 
2. Plots and characters 
Explore the plots and analyze the characters. Before Elisa’s entrance 
    Q1: What were the two gentlemen doing?   Q2: Who interrupted them? 
  Q3: Why did she interrupt them? ... 
Has she got an interesting accent? 
(interesting accent : strange/flawed/terrible/horrible accent) Henry Higgins: excellent, confident, self-centered, arrogant   Pickering: modest 
Tip 1: Speeches and the stage directions reflect the personality of the characters. 
【設(shè)計意圖】通過問題鏈的形式引導(dǎo)學(xué)生展開閱讀，了解角色的語言，出場，動作，表情等對于角色個性體現(xiàn)的重要作用。通過對于interesting這一詞的替換引導(dǎo)學(xué)生去體會文本用語的精妙之處，感知語言之美。

Tip 3: The suspense at the end of the scene makes the play more attractive.

 Think about what will happen in Elisa’s first lesson. 
 Make up a dialogue between Elisa, Higgins, and Colonel Pickering and prepare for a group 
role-play presentation in the next lesson.
