Aims of the lesson
As for the teaching aims, the students are supposed to enlarge their knowledge of what the Special Olympics is and what the volunteers do for the event. At the same time, the students are expected to know how to help others around themselves and call upon more people to give love to others. Key points and special difficulties
The key point of this lesson is to help the students learn the language points in this article. The difficult point is to encourage the students to make a speech using the language points they have just learned. All the difficulties originate from the fact that the students lack enough vocabulary to describe what they know about the Special Olympics and the volunteers.
Teaching procedure
Step One Presentation
Show some pictures about the Special Olympics. Ask students questions about the pictures.
(Review what they have learned so that they can get ready for the new class.) Step Two Revision
1. Talk about the Special Olympics World Games When was it held? Where was it held?
Who took part in the games?
2. Talk about the Liu Ming’s & Li Hai’s experiences
(From Liu Ming and Li Hai’s experiences, students can feel the spirit of the volunteers and athletes. Also, teacher presents the new language points.) Step Three Language points
T: The Special Olympics World Games are very special. Can you tell me why it is special? Talk about ‘special’ from the following four aspects: 1. Special People
Q: What has Special Olympics meant to Li Hai?

(1)Translate some sentences and sum up how to use ‘not… but…’ (2) Free talk with partners
(Encourage students to use “not… but…” to talk about their own lives. Make them know what is more important and meaningful things.) 2. Special Games

Show students pictures and ask them to make sentences using ‘be similar to…’ (By comparing the lives of different people, students get to know how to cherish their own lives.) 3. Special Feelings
(1) Ask students to compare Liu Ming’s feeling before and after the Special Olympics. Li Ming did not know what to expect before. expect sth./sb.… expect to do… pair work: talk about the pictures.
(2) Liu Ming worked as a volunteer. He volunteered to be the swimming coach for a
young boy. volunteer noun. volunteer for sth. volunteer to do sth… Look and guess: They volunteer for… They volunteer to do… (3) Q: Was it easy for Liu Ming to teach Li Hai? What do you think of Liu Ming? It’s + adj. + for sb + to do sth. It’s + adj. + of sb + to do sth.
Talk about the volunteers’ work for the Special Olympics.

Step Four: Make a speech 1. Watch a video 2. Think and discuss
3. Make a speech : call upon more people to be volunteers
(By showing the students the video of the 12th Special Olympics in Shanghai, I will
guide the students to have a discussion: Would you like to call upon more people to help with the Special Olympics? What can you do? After the discussion, I advise students to make a speech: Suppose you are Liu Ming. After the Special Olympics, you want to call upon more people to be volunteers. Students can work in groups of four and finish the task together. Their speech should include: (1) Introduce yourself; (2) Say something about the Special Olympics World Games; (3)Share your experiences and your feelings as a volunteer; (4) Call upon more people to be volunteers. In their speech, they should use the language points they have just learned as many as possible.
Finally, to encourage the students to give love to the people in need, I will guide the students to read a poem. They read the poem together and put their hand in hand to feel the love from others: If everyone gives his love to the people in need, the world will be full of sunshine!)
Step Five: Homework
1. Use the Internet to learn more about the Special Olympics World Games.
