Objectives：
At the end of the class, students are expected to
1）understand the new words in the context such as hard-working, silly, disappointed;
2）have a better understanding of the story by skimming and scanning and further understand the
meaning behind the story by critical thinking;
3）realize the importance of working hard for a better life.

Teaching focus：
1. to guide students to analyze the personalities of the two characters  2. to inspire students to think critically and learn from the story that:
1) we should work hard for a better future; 2) we help others when they are in trouble;
3) we should give people who have made mistakes another chance.
Possible learning difficulty:
To describe the characters in the story with good reasoning and clear logic
Procedures Steps Learning activities
Teaching purposes

Pre-reading
Brainstorm the features of different seasons and how students feel about them
To activate
students’
background knowledge  and guide students into the topic

While-reading
Ask students to talk about the animals in the pictures
To guide students into the story
Skim the story and match key information with each paragraph
To help students have a general idea of how the story develops
Scan the story and complete the mind map with guided questions
To enable students to have a detailed analysis of the story




                            Read the mind map and the story and then think about the personalities of the grasshopper and the ant and give reasons
and the two characters
Post-reading
Pair work:
Tell part of story with the help of the pictures and the mind map. To enable students to tell part
of the story logically Group discussion:
 What can you learn from the story?
 Who do you think are the “ants” in your class? Why?

Assignments
1. Readthe story three times and tell it with your own words (including who, when, where, what, how and your opinions).

To help students consolidate what they’ve learnt and raise students’ interest in reading
similar stories.
