T: Good afternoon, class! What did you have for lunch?
(Students have various answers.)
T: (Show pictures of varieties of foods)You see, we have so many things to eat. But did you know what our grandparents had when they were young? They had nothing to eat but the trees. (Play a piece of video of the great famine in the 1940s.)
T: Why did they suffer from famine?
Ss: Because of the weather.
T: Yes, but more than that. I think another important reason is that we have such a large population with so little farmland. (show two pictures to make a contrast)
T: In order to solve this problem, who do you think is more important, a farmer or a scientist? Maybe a farmer and scientist is the most important. (Show pictures of Dr. Yuan Longping)That is Yuan Longping—a pioneer for all people. Today, we will learn something about him.

Group-work:
Suppose Dr. Yuan is coming to our school’s “Yingao Forum(論壇)” to make a lecture this Friday.
You are supposed to:
1. design a poster for it
2. make an oral(口頭的) presentation for the poster to attract as many students as possible.
Tips:
1. Try to make your poster as attractive as possible, which should include key words about Dr. Yuan and his forum.
2. Make good use of the phrases learnt from the passage.
3. Add charming words to your presentation to make it the most interesting.
