Listening and Speaking -- Talk about saving endangered wildlife

Analysis of the teaching material:
The theme of this unit is “Human and nature” and the topic of this class is “talk about saving endangered wildlife”. The purpose of this part aims to raise students’ awareness of protecting wildlife through a series of activities. Besides, students will learn that the small things they do in their daily life also count.
Teaching aims

  1. use visuals to predict the content of the listening text;
  2. improve listening skills for detailed information through listening;
  3. Learn about ways to care for wildlife through discussing.
Teaching Important Points:
  1. Use visuals to predict the content;
  2. Listen for detailed information;
  3. Learn more about the current situation of wild animals, put forward suggestions and solutions, discuss with their partners, and show the results to the whole class.
Teaching Difficult Points:
Students can talk about an endangered animal using the functional sentences of the dialogue.
Blackboard design
          present situation ---- under threat / dying out at an alarming rate
 
Wildlife   reasons for extinction --- pollution / habitat loss/ illegal hunting

measures --- make laws / set up nature reserves / .........
 
Teaching Procedure:
Step 1: Lead-in
   
What do you know about the animals in the picture?
 
 
Can you list some other animals that are also in danger of dying out?
[Purpose: Introduce the theme picture and talk about some facts about African elephants to arouse students’ interest.]
Step 2. Listening
(1) Pre-listening (Discussion)
Activity 1: Discuss the questions in pairs
Describe the  posters What message do the posters share? Which one moves you the most? Why?
   
[Purpose: Guide students to use visuals to predict content. Enable the students to know that we are running out of time and we must take action now to protect wildlife.]
  1. While-listening(Part 1)
Activity 2: Listen to the whole text and fill in the blanks below.
Read the passage and try to fill in the blanks using proper words
Listen again to fill in the blanks Our planet’s __________ is dying out at an alarming rate. Between 150 and 200 species are becoming extinct every day. This mass extinction is caused by hunting, habitat _____, and pollution. We must make people aware of the problem and help _______ the endangered wildlife before it’s too late.
What can we learn from the passage?  
[Purpose: Guide the students to listen to get the main idea.]

Activity 3: Answer the following questions after listening to part 2.
1. Who is not mentioned in the passage?

3. What did Prince William say about China’s efforts to protect wildlife?

Step 3. Speaking
Activity 5 In pairs, discuss the questions and then talk about one of the animals in the photos.

Example A: Role-play
A: I’m concerned about the African elephants. What do you know about them?
B: Well, I know that they're being hunted and their habitat is getting smaller, so they're in
danger of extinction. Elephants need large living spaces, so it's difficult for them to
adapt to the changes.
A: That's terrible. What measures are being taken to help them?
B: The authorities are under pressure to build elephant parks and tell people not to buy
elephant products.

[Purpose: Consolidate the expressions learned in the last few activities and practise presenting details to the class.]
Conclusion:
Show the students a series of pictures concerning the theme that people live in harmony with nature. Ask them to share their feelings when seeing the pictures.
Arrive at the conclusion: We are all connected. Saving wild animals is saving ourselves.
Step 4. Homework
Make a short speech to call on people around you to protect wildlife.
 The following points should be included.
1. the alarming situation endangered wildlife is facing;
2. the reasons why they are dying out ;
3. the effective measures our government has taken;
4. small things we can do in our daily life to help protect wildlife.
